It
is amazing the difference 10 years makes. Way back in 1986 when the Samurai was
first imported to the United Sates it was primarily a young persons truck.
It was even sold with a red and white striped top highlighting a trip to the
beach. The good news it was affordable!. Sad thing was if you wanted any type of
lift or modifications you had to make it yourself. Within a very short
time the Samurai was found to be a very capable off road truck. Even stock you
could have a great deal of adventure. Didn't last long stock. Not sure of the
exact order they came to be but the aftermarket found there was a market for
this little truck with so many possibilities. When searching for lifts for
the two trucks in the Ultimate Project Build Off we had a lot of options. We
tried to select kits that are more on the extreme side of what the aftermarket
offers. We also wanted to show the engineering and planning that goes into kit
design. So many times we read or hear from Samurai owners, I want it cheap or I
can build it myself. For some I am sure they have the capabilities. For us at
iZook we wanted to use the experience and knowledge of shops that have been in
business for a long time and who have built their own rigs! Why reinvent the
wheel? They (aftermarket) have the time and resources that many of us do
not have to design, build and offer professional lift kits.In Truck Two the
lift we decided on was the Rocky Road Outfitters Coil Kit. Quoted from
Glenn at Roack-Road:
Why coils? Easy question. Flexibility, ride quality, and control.....
Gone
are the days of wrapping up springs and axle hop. Leaf springs allow the axle to
rotate when under hard acceleration or steep climbs. The new multi-link
suspension of this coil kit eliminates this possibility and gives you a
precision driving experience which can be better than stock... even with a big
lift and tires.
Comfort is the real biggie though. Within days of installing our first coil kit,
we took off for a 4wheeling road trip which took us over 3,000 miles across the
Southwest and culminated in the hard core capital of the U.S., Las Cruces, NM.
The ride was dreamy and felt as good as any modern SUV we've been in. On the
trail, it was unbeatable. Those that have ridden in the coil sprung Samurais
have likened it to sitting on a marshmallow. If you are looking for the ultimate
in ride quality, nothing touches a coil suspension.
Articulation is probably the main reason folks start to look at a coil
suspension.... and they will not be disappointed. Actual articulation
measurements will vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on your tire, wheel,
and axle choice. With the coil setup though, you can expect close to 40" of
articulation once installed depending on wheel and tire choice. Those with wider
axles may even see more!for a larger
What separates our Samurai coil kit from any other on the market? Besides all
the extra mandatory items included in the Rocky Road kit but not in the others,
besides the better pricing, besides the lifetime guarantee of a well established
shop, besides all that.... reasonable turnaround times on shipping. One other
shop we know of making a coil kit in the past has forced their customers and
suppliers to wait up to and OVER a year from the time of payment to ship kits!
Most of our kits ship within a couple weeks.
We wanted you to have an opportunity to tour the Rocky Road Outfitters shop.
Art Lilley was kind enough to share some pictures of a recent trip to the shop.
First a little information on the shop and how it impacts the community. We
already know how they have impacted our off road experience in our trucks!
- We are located
about 45 minutes east of Salt Lake City, in Heber City Utah.
- Population 10,000.
- Rocky Road is the 4 largest employer in our city.
- We own the building. It has about 10,000 sq ft. Approx 7,000 of that is
manufacturing. The other 3,000 is shipping and office space.
- We currently have 20 full time employees (not including myself and Jennifer). 4
full time phone staff to answer tech questions and take orders.
1 secretary. 3 in shipping. The rest in manufacturing.
- We do sell retail and have a dealer network. A couple of our more well-known
dealers are Rubicon Express and Don-A-Vee Jeep. We do welcome new dealers.
- We are one of
the few Suzuki companies that has online ordering. Makes it nice when you
can't get to the phone in the middle of the day. And also nice so you don't
have to wait in a phone queue to place an order. Order your parts real-time.
