On the Hot Seat
with Brent May

OK, first of all, let me explain to you all how and why I came up with the idea for the "Hot Seat" article.  Being an attendee of 3 ZookiMelt's and various other smaller 4x4 gatherings, I've noticed something when one is walking around the campgrounds checking out all of the cool rigs. You meet one of the owners of said rig, and most conversations seem to go as follows:  "Hello, nice looking rig ya got there.  What all have you done to it?"  In which case the proud owner then begins to explain all of the little bells and whistles he/she has done to said rig.
The thing I noticed is that very few of us really get to know the owner behind the rigs.  Why they got into the sport to begin with, and why they chose the rig they wheel.
So, I came up with the idea of a little "20 questions" format, interviewing various people in and around the Suzuki community, to help get to know them a little better.  You never know, maybe you'll find you have more in common than just wheeling!
This month, I decided to turn the "hot seat" on myself.  I know that the majority of you reading this have no idea who I am or where I come from, so I've decided to interview myself to give you all a better idea of who I am.  I hope you enjoy it and I'll see you around the campfires!

1. What is your full name?
Brent E. May

2. Where were you born?
Bedford, Indiana

3. How old are you?
32

4. Any brother's or sister's?
2 Brother's and 2 sisters

5. Where do you currently live?
Bedford, IN

6. Where do you work?
JC Penneys (Come in and check out our merchandise, were having a one day only sale again this week....lol)

7. What do you do there?
I'm a Dept. Manager in the Catalogue department, and I'm also one of the floor managers.

8. Do you have a nick name that you go by?
Depends on who you ask! But I'm Pure Evil71 on most BBS posts

9. How long have you been into the sport of off-roading?
I got into it back in 2000 when I first got my Samurai.

10. Who or what first got you interested in the sport?
That would be Bob Smith. He's the one that started going out with the big trucks that were roaming the mud holes around here and showing them what a samurai could do, he also really pushed his friends into buying them so we could all go with him.

11. Are you involved in any off-road club's, and if so what is the name of your club?
We're working on it, but right now were known as the "Bedford Boys" or "Ball's Deep 4x4 of Bedford." Ranger Rick gave us that name (the Bedford Boy's) basically because there was such a large group of us from Bedford.

12. What is the year, make, and model of your current off-road 4x4?
It's an 88.5 Samurai JX

13. How long have you had it?
Got it in 2000

14. Why did you choose this particular 4x4?
Bob made me get it...lol. He found it on the internet for me over in Ohio. He would find them, and we would go out and buy them.

15. Is this your first off-road 4x4?
I've owned 4x4's before, but this is the first one I've owned that's been built to go off road. The other's were only off roaded if I happened to be going hunting or something like that.

16. What's the scariest moment you've ever had off-roading?
Probably at last years ZookiMelt when I almost done an endo down a 30' hill after dropping my front tire in a washout! Lucky for me, when I let off the brake's it rolled down hill on the tires and not the top...lol

17. What was the funniest?
Dropping in a big water hole we call "ROGER" with a date that had never been off roading before. Needless to say, I didn't make it through, and the water was up over our laps while we were sitting in the samurai! Did I mention the water was really cold that day!

18. What have you learned from the sport that you can apply to your everyday life?
I can defiantly tell a difference in my driving now, especially when the roads are a little less than perfect. I'm a sort of "seat of my pants" type of wheeler and I can feel the rig reacting in different way, and that translates to my street driving sometimes as well.

19. If you could sit down and talk to anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?
Anyone from the old testament! I'd love to hear some of the stories they could tell, and what it was like to be able to ask God a question and get an instant reply...lol

20. What was the name of the last book you read?
A collection of short stories by Edger Allen Poe. Poems and some of his better known stories.

21. What was the last movie that you watched?
The Recruit...Very good movie!

22. What is your favorite style of music?
I like almost anything, but I mostly listen to hard rock and some country, really depends on my mood

23. When your not off-roading, or working, how do you like to spend your time?
I love being outdoors, so in the summer I play a lot of tennis and ride my mountain bike, during the winter I bowl so I try and stay as active as possible. Probably too active, but it keeps me out of trouble, sort of!

24. If I gave you a plane ticket to visit any where in the world, where would you go?
I have always wanted to visit New Zealand or Australia during the Oz Open.

25. Name someplace that you have visited that you would love to visit again.
Probably Germany. I was there back in ‘97 and I'd love to go back. It's a very beautiful country and I got to go to some really neat small towns while I was there.

26. If you could give one piece of advice to any future off-road enthusiasts, what would it be?
Don't take to sport too seriously, and don't think that just because the guy next to you has Dana 44's and 35" Boggers that you need them to! Get to know your rig and how it does and make improvements to it a little at a time. I hate nothing more than to see a guy driving an over built rig that #1 has no idea how to use it to begin with and #2 thinks just because his is built to the hilt, it's better than everyone else's. I've seen guy's have just as much fun if not more in a $500 dollar rig as the guy next to him on the trail in a $10,000 rig! Just ask Murph about his trip to Haspin in Billy Bob's black tin top!
