1. What is your
full name?
Scott Andrew Trester
2. Where were you
born?
Indianapolis, Indiana
3. How old are
you?
Uh, I forget... oh yeah, 43. The important ones, like 16 and 21, I
remember. After that, I don't keep track. ...Last thing I remember, I
was 28...
4. Any brothers
or sisters?
1 older brother and 4 younger sisters
5. Where do you
currently live?
Danville, Indiana
6. Where do you
currently work?
Hilltop Press
7. What do you do
there?
Computer graphics and page layout in the pre-press department.
8. Do you have a
nick name that you go by?
No
9. How long have
you been into the sport of off-roading?
About 12 years or so.
10. Who or what
first got you interested in the sport?
When I was a kid, my dad was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He
stored several military jeeps (M-38's) for the national guard, and we
got to drive them around. I was hooked. Actually, I owned a couple of
Jeeps before I ever actually got involved in serious trail driving and
stuff. My brother-in-law helped me to indulge my hobby and we both
started modifying our rigs.
11. Are you
involved in any off-road clubs, and if so what is the name of your club?
I never really had the time to get involved in a club. My buddies
and I have an informal club that we call "Rock Pile 4x4" - based on this
massive pile of rocks (my brother-in-law is a landscaper) that we keep
piling up to drive over. (Pic attached is of me on it in my Samurai)
12. What is the
year, make, and model of your current off-road 4x4?
Now I'm driving a 1996 Suzuki X-90
13. How long have
you had it?
A couple of years now.
14. Why did you
choose this particular 4x4?
I can only afford one vehicle for me, and need a good daily driver.
My Samurai was kinda rough. I like the looks of the X and the way it
handles. Kinda like a 4x4 sports car. And, I can still go wheelin' in
it. I do miss my Samurai tho!
15. Is this your
first off-road 4x4?
My first was an old Jeep CJ5. Then I upgraded to a CJ7. Later, I
found my Scramber (CJ8) and that's when I really got started upgrading,
modifying, and off-roading. But, you know how Jeeps are - Just Empty
Every Pocket! So I found a good Samurai and built it up (33's, SPOA,
gears and locker, etc..). Then I got my X-90 and am doing what I can to
it.
16. What’s the
BEST modification you’ve made to your 4x4?
A good set of tires! Followed closely by a locker. IMHO, the best
things you can do to create a good off-road rig.
17. What’s the
WORST modification you’ve made?
Add-a-leafs for suspension lift. Oh, and the 'cold air sensor mod'
thingy - didn't do much.
18. What’s the
scariest moment you’ve ever had off-roading?
2 events come to mind. First was my bumper incident while on a Jeep
Jamboree back in '98. To save the long details, I was stuck and the nut
that attached the tow strap, wrapped it around my bumper. Final massive
pull and 'Pop' my bumper comes flying off and hits 3 people standing
nearby, breaking one kids leg in 3 places. I learned a lot from that
one. Second was playing in the quarry at the Badlands, I raced up a very
steep hill, which became vertical at the top. My rig stood straight up
with the front wheels about 6 foot in the air. I almost flipped end-over
backwards. I could feel all my weight on the back of the seat as I just
hung there for what seemed like eternity, then it lightly dropped
forward and up and over the hill. Where are all the cameras and
spectators when you need em?
19. What was the
funniest?
Wheeling (again at the Badlands) with some buddies, we were doing
poser shots on some rocks and I started tipping over, head first over
this boulder. Everyone jumped on the rear bumper to counterbalance,
those that weren't laughing anyway.
20. What have you
learned from the sport that you can apply to your everyday life?
I've met a great bunch of people off-roading, and the Suzuki crowd
is about the best. With a common interest and goal, we all get along
just great and help each other out. Newby or old-timer, everyone seems
to accept the other's ability, or lack thereof, and still enjoy the good
times we have. I try to apply that to all my associations. To get
philosophical ... "On the off-road trail of life, ya gotta know when to
hit the power, when to hit the brake, and when to just let it roll."
21. If you could
sit down and talk to anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?
King David of bible times. He led a full, action packed life and was
still a good guy.
22. What was the
name of the last book you read?
Timeline
23. What was the
last movie that you watched?
...Been so long, I can't remember
24. What is your
favorite style of music?
Rock, country, and Jazz. Just about anything except classical.
25. What do you
like to listen to on the trails?
Mother Nature
26. When your not
off-roading, or working, how do you like to spend your time?
I'm very active as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in the preaching work.
I also like to spend as much time as I can with my family.
27. If I gave you
a free ticket to visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Australia.
28. Name
someplace that you have visited that you would love to visit again.
Germany - it's a beautiful country.
29. If you could
give one piece of advice to any future off-road enthusiasts, what would
it be?
This is really a fun sport. Don't take it too seriously. But don't
get reckless either. Know your abilities and what your rig can do.
Always wheel with a buddy, and keep it safe.
Thank you Scott, and you are now off the Hot Seat
