9.
Do you have a Nickname that you like to go by?
Fred
10. If so, how did you get this Nickname?
Some folks say I look like Fred Flinstone. I don’t see it ha ha ha.
11. How many years have you been into the
sport of off roading?
Since I was 16 and would rally the Rabbit through Kitty Hawk woods
on the dirt roads. That was so much fun! That seems so long ago, 19
years now total .
12. Who, or what first got you interested in
the sport?
I wanted a 4wd for the beach and the dunes. Back then there trails
all over Corolla.
13. Are you involved in any off-road club’s?
If so, what is the name of your club?
Zuwharrie.com and Zuki Krawlers are the closest thing to a club I
participate in. And I rabidly support the Blue Ribbon Coalition.
14. What kinds of 4x4's do you own?
2 1988 Suzuki Samurais
15. Tell us about your Suzuki.
The newest one I am building has a 2.0 liter, kicker 4, diamond
axles, allied bead locks, Rock 4 X Fabrication Cage and tube clip.
And there's a lot of my own FredFab handiwork on there too. The
other one I bought from RobZuk, it has a 16 valve and 4.9 t case
gears.
16.
How long have you had it?
2 years on the creeper and 3 months on the Robs old rig.
17. Does it have a Nickname?
Creeper I guess, as the build up just creeps along. At some point a
better name will just sort of “happen".
18. How often do you get to wheel?
2 to 3 times a year. I work too much.
19. What's the best modification you made to
your rig so far?
Buying RobZuks 16 valve samurai so I have one to drive while I am
working on creeper.
20. What's the worst?
Overbuilding it . It was supposed to be a daily drivable wheeler on
33s . I am wavering between 35s and 37s now .
21. Bolt on Mods, or make it yourself?
I like to make it myself if possible... Having a garage has helped
me a lot now that all the tools don’t have to be drug in and out of
the shed anymore.
22. What’s your level of mechanical skills?
Pine tree vs. shade tree as that’s where I wrenched for so long!
23.
How do you like your trails? (Scenic drive, I like a little
challenge, or show me the pain!)
As I get older I like scenic trails more and more, as long as theirs
some good obstacles along the way.
24. What’s the scariest moment you’ve ever
had off-roading?
Back flipping on Dump bump. It happened so fast yet seemed to unfold
so slow. The cage held and within a few hours the Turtle was up and
running again.
25. What was the funniest?
Watching Art hit the only tree on Rusty Nail in Moab.
26. What have you learned from the sport
that you can apply to your everyday life?
Live today, we may not be here tomorrow .
27. What other outdoor activities do you
enjoy?
Mountain Biking and Metal Fabrication.
28. If you could sit down and talk to
anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?
Art Lilley (aka NC ZUK)… Any conversation with him was funny and
educational. I miss knowing I can call him up anytime and no matter
what's going on he would take the time to sit down and talk. I miss
you buddy.
29.
Books on tape, or sit down and read?
Read, but I read the bulletin boards more than anything else.
30. DVD at home or Theater?
DVD at home, too many rude people for me to enjoy a movie anymore.
31. What is on your MP3, or in your CD
player right now?
Tiger Army… Music from regions beyond.
32. Radio, CD’s or "Trail Music" when your
wheeling?
Trail music. I listen to my rig and get used to what it's
supposed to sound like. When there is an odd sound its usually a
warning.
33. When you're not off-roading, or working,
how do you like to spend your time?
With Kimbo and my daughter and soon to be son. If they are busy you
will find me in the garage.
34. If I gave you a free ticket to visit
anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Tahiti as long as I could take my family.
35. What did you want to be most as a kid?
Accepted. Being the fat kid until the 8th grade wasn’t a lot of fun
. I was the size I am today by the 9th grade so not too many kids
picked on me anymore. And it thickened my skin too!
36. If you could learn to speak any language
that you do not already know, what would it be?
Spanish, so I could work down south without the language barrier.
37.
What is your best time of the day, morning, noon, or night?
Noon to night.
38. What’s your most embarrassing moment (so
far)?
Putting my Stazworks double bead locks together before Zuwharrie and
not noticing the lack of air down holes in the liner. It was lots of
fun to wheel at 25 psi on 36” Irok balloons!
39. Have you ever met anyone famous, and if
so, who?
Chevy Chase shops at one of the hardware stores I remodeled. He just
acts like a regular guy… in a $200,000 Mercedes!
40. Tell me a little known fact about
yourself.
I grew up as a fat boat builder.
41. If you could give any piece of advice to
a future off-roader, what would it be?
Respect the environment around you and tread lightly so that future
generations will be able to see the back roads and trails we all
love.
Thank you Greg, and you are now off the Hot Seat!
