gear ratios in 4x4 conversion

Postby yvonjack » Thu Aug 13, 2009 6:14 pm

I'm still trying to locate a 4WD complete axle assembly for my 1992 2WD sammy. I talked to a guy who said he had assemblies with two different gear ratios. Which did I need? He asked for my VIN which was no help. He told me I need the gear ratio to match my rear axle.

He suggested I contact a dealer with my VIN to see if they couldn't tell me the gear ratio. They were no help.

I'm sure I sound like a total nimrod but is there a simple way of figuring out what the gear ratio is on the rear axle without taking anything apart?

if you differential is open, you can jack one tire off the ground, make a mark on it that you can see while underneath the vehicle. make another mark on the drive shaft and put the transmission in neautral. (always chock the tires and all that good stuff) turn the drive shaft and count the turns it takes to make one full turn of the tires. I am fairly certian that your 92 samurai with have 3.73 gears. however many turns it takes the driveshaft will be the gear ratio. if it takes 3 and 3/4 of a turn then you have 3.73 gears a little over 4 turns and you got 4.10 gears.
hope this helps
